Reflect on your inquiry question and how your understanding is changing, becoming more focused, or is perhaps being reaffirmed by your research. What do you know now that you didn’t know when you started your research?
When I began researching my inquiry question I assumed that I would come to a definite conclusion as to whether texting slang has a positive or negative impact on students’ literacy. However as I continued my research and put together my essay and video presentation, it became apparent that this would not be the case. The articles that I read tended to prove that there are both positive and negative impacts of texting slang on students writing abilities. Although this limits me from finding an definitive answer to my question, it allows me to ask new questions surrounding my area of inquiry. For example, one might infer that the impact of textese on students’ literacy may differ from person to person and could could be affected by multiple factors, such as a student’s age when they begin to use textese frequently or their initial writing abilities. In conclusion, I have learned that my inquiry question requires much further exploration and cannot truly be concluded with a simple answer. This understanding may lead me to complete a related project for ZIP next year.
